Abstract
313,892. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 19, 1927. Hydroxyalkyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols and esters thereof; ester condensation products.- Hydroxyalkyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols and their derivatives are produced by reacting polyhydric alcohols or their derivatives containing at least one free hydroxy group with alkyene oxides, in presence if desired of condensing agents. The alcohols mentioned are glycerol, erythritol, sorbito] and sugars. The products may be esterified with formic, acetic, benzoic, oxalic, maleic, succinic, or phthalic acid. In the examples, (1) sorbitol is treated with ethylene oxide at 140‹ C.; (2) penta-erythritol is heated with ethylene oxide and boric anhydride at 125‹ C.; (3) the product from sorbitol and ethylene oxide is acylated with acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid: (4) glycerol is heated with ethylene oxide and the product is heated with phthalic anhydride, yielding a resin; (5) glycerol is partially etherified with ethylene oxide and boric acid and the product heated with succinic acid at 160‹ C., yielding a viscous soluble product which on further heating is converted into an insoluble resin.
