Abstract
Organic esters of cellulose in the production of which sulphuric acid has been used as catalyst are stabilized by heating them with an aqueous liquid of alkalinity (reckoned as calcium carbonate) less than 5 parts per million and a surface-active agent, to a temperature above 100 DEG C. under pressure. The process may be applied to cellulose acetates having an acetyl value of 55 per cent to 57 per cent or more, calculated as acetic acid. The surface-active agents are preferably non-ionic or anionic. They include the partial esters of polyhydric alcohols with long chain carboxylic acids, short chain hydroxy-alkyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols esterified with long chain fatty acids, long chain polyhydric alcohols, polyethylene glycols having a molecular weight of 200-600, condensation products of fatty acids with mixtures of amino-acids and polypeptides made by hydrolysing proteins, and salts of straight or branched long chain alkyl sulphates, for example sodium secondary tetradecyl sulphate. The preferred agents are long chain fatty acid partial esters of polyoxyalkylene derivatives of hexitol anhydrides, and 0.1 per cent to 10 per cent by weight of the surface-active agent may be used. The stabilisation may be carried out at a temperature of 130-160 DEG C. Examples are given of the use of polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate and the Registered Trade Mark "Triton NE."
