Abstract
A water-insoluble cellulose acetate in solution in aqueous acetic acid is subjected to hydrolysis in the presence of a catalyst until it becomes water-soluble; the catalyst is then neutralized and the solution is dialyzed to remove substantially all the acetic acid and water-soluble salts. The aqueous solution of water-soluble cellulose acetate may be used for sizing textile yarns. Sulphuric acid may be used as the catalyst and it may be neutralized with sodium acetate. The course of the hydrolysis may be followed by periodically taking a sample of the solution and pouring it into water. The treatment is complete when a sample no longer forms a precipitate. Dialysis may be effected by means of a regenerated cellulose membrane. In an example, a solution of secondary cellulose acetate containing acetic acid and sulphuric acid is diluted with dilute acetic acid and the solution is maintained at 25 DEG C. for about 10 days until a test-sample shows that the cellulose acetate is soluble in water. Sodium acetate is then added to neutralize the sulphuric acid and the solution is then dialyzed until the acetic acid content is reduced to less than 2 per cent. The resulting solution may be used directly for sizing celulose acetate warps. Specification 479,239 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,129,052 and 2,169,757 are referred to.
