Abstract
288,997. Wolff & Co., and Weingand, R. April 19, 1927, [Convention date]. Preparatory treatment of cellulose.-Cellulose which has been freed from hemicellulose, wholly or in part, by treatment with alkali is treated with a salt solution or an aliphatic alcohol prior to washing with water, whereby the formation of further amounts of hemicellulose is avoided. Suitable salt solutions are solutions of sodium chloride and potassium sulphate. In an example, ordinary cellulose is stirred with soda lye, the bulk of the lye is removed by means of a centrifuge, aspirator, or cell-filter, and the soda cellulose so obtained is treated with sodium chloride solution, either directly or after a further washing with a small amount of alkali lye, and is allowed to stand. Then, after removing the liquid, the cellulose is washed with water until the washings are only feebly alkaline, the residual alkali is removed with hydrochloric acid, and the cellulose is thoroughly washed and dried. The washings may be used again in the process.
