Abstract

Precipitated secondary cellulose acetate is treated immediately prior to final drying with an aqueous solution containing an acid Group Ia or Group IIa metal salt of a polybasic acid having a pH p within the range 60-7.5, and preferably within the range 6.4-7.0. The Groups Ia and IIa referred to are those of the Periodic Classification. The treated cellulose acetate possesses improved thermal and colour stability and is particularly useful for moulding compositions. Suitable salts are sodium dihydrogen phosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, the magnesium hydrogen phosphates and sodium dihydrogen citrate. The water used for making up the solution should contain less than 20 parts per million total solids. In an example 100 parts by weight of cellulose are converted to secondary cellulose acetate by reaction with acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid in conventional manner. To the stabilized ester containing about 300 parts of hard water is added a solution of 1.8 parts of sodium dihydrogen phosphate and 0.25 parts of sodium hydroxide in 1500 parts of water containing less than 20 parts per million total solids. After stirring for 1 hour, the liquor is drained off, the ester centrifuged to a mixture content of about 200 per cent and finally dried to a moisture content of about 4 per cent.
