Abstract

263,119. New Jersey Zinc Co., (Assignees of Hooey, W. C.). Dec. 15, 1925, [Convention date]. Pigments.-In the manufacture of lithopone, uniform products are obtained by determining the end point of the reaction between the zinc sulphate and barium sulphate solutions by the amount of hydrate and/or sulphydrate present in the crude pulp. The results obtained depend on the excess of and ratio between the hydrate and sulphydrate radicals in the crude pulp, and this excess and ratio may be arbitrarily chosen. The ratio of hydrate to sulphydrate radicals in the barium sulphide liquor itself may be controlled by the addition of barium hydrate or sulphuric acid. The hydrate content of the liquor is increased by producing the barium sulphide from barytes of high iron or manganese content, by using moist charge in the baryte furnace, or by utilizing the later leaches of the black ash (baryte furnace product). The excess and ratio of the radicals referred to, in the crude pulp in the precipitating tank, may be finally controlled by the addition of barium or other hydrates, such as those of calcium, magnesium, or sodium. Specification 263,120 is referred to.
