Abstract
2 - Alkyl - 1 : 4 - naphthaquinone - 4 - carboxy - alkoximes are prepared by condensation of carboxyalkylhydroxylamines with 2-alkyl-1 : 4-naphthaquinones. The condensation is preferably carried out using an aqueous alcohol solution of the salts, especially the hydrochlorides or semi-hydrochlorides of the carboxyalkylhydroxylamines. Particularly useful products are formed when the 2-alkyl group is methyl. The carboxymethoxylamine used in the reaction may be prepared by the acid hydrolysis of acetone carboxymethoxime or preferably of acetophenonecarboxymethoxime. Two examples are given and the products are: (1) 2-methyl-1 : 4-naphthaquinone-4-carboxymethoxime; (2) 2-methyl-1 : 4-naphthaquinone-4-a -carboxyethoxime. Carboxymethoxylamine is prepared by heating acetophenone carboxymethoxime with hydrochloric acid and distilling. The other alkyl derivatives are similarly prepared.
