Abstract

Solutions of sodium p-aminosalicylate are stabilized for heat sterilization by adding sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate. Compositions may contain 0.5 to 20 per cent. by weight of the former, with 0.01 to 2 per cent. by weight of the latter reckoned on the weight of water present with or without 0.1 to 0.6 per cent. of sodium bicarbonate. In an example, portions of the solution from one litre of water containing 30 gms. of sodium p-aminosalicylate, stabilized with 1 gm. of sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate stood sterilization at 100-120 DEG without deterioration. Decarboxylation was lessened by the addition of sodium bicarbonate to the solution.ALSO:Aqueous solutions of sodium para-amino-salicylate are stabilized for heat sterilization for use in intravenous injection by the addition of 0.01-2.0 per cent by weight of sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate to 0.5-20 per cent by weight of the above compound in water with or without 0.1-0.6 per cent of sodium bicarbonate. The solution containing 30 gms. sodium p-aminosalicylate in 1 litre, stabilized with 1 gm. of sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate could be sterilized at 100-120 DEG C, without deterioration, decarboxylation being lessened by the addition of sodium bicrabonate.
