Abstract

The precipitation of iron and other polyvalent metals, including water-hardening constituents, in aqueous caustic alkali is inhibited by incorporating an amount e.g. 0.5-10 per cent of a triethanolamine alkali metal alcoholate sufficient to react completely with the iron to form a soluble complex compound. The alcoholate or triethanolamine which forms the alcoholate may be added during concentration of the alkali or part may be added after concentration. A small amount, e.g. 1-5 per cent, of the alkali metal salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid increases the stabilizing effect and may be added in solution after concentration of the alkali or before if spray drying is used. The solid product obtained can be dissolved in water without the formation of a precipitate.
