A process for the preparation of a detergent composition comprising an active detergent component and an alkali metal silicate, the process of which is characterized by: (a) the detergent active component constitutes about 35 to 80% of the weight of the detergent composition and the active detergent component itself comprises, on the weight of the detergent active component, at least about 20% of a detergent active agent not ionic, a water soluble detergent active agent based on ether sulfate or a water soluble detergent active agent based on olefin sulphonate and (b) the alkali metal silicate constitutes about 10 to 40% by weight of the detergent composition and is of sufficient alkalinity so that an aqueous solution containing 0.1% by weight of the detergent composition has a ph not lower to 9 approximately.
