Abstract

An aqueous solution or suspension of a salt of a sulphuric acid ester, derived from a higher alkene or the corresponding alcohol, is dried in a thin layer on a heated roller or other surface in the presence of a proportion of a water-soluble crystallizable salt, amounting to at least about 125 per cent by weight of the ester salt. The crystallizable salt must have a melting-point higher than the drying temperature. Suitable salts are the alkali and ammonium halides, sulphates, phosphates, and borates; also alkali silicates. A pulverized or scaly product is obtained, and if phosphates, borates or silicates are used, products with particularly favourable washing properties are obtained. The products may be used for washing textiles, for cleaning metals, and as wetting agents. The process may be carried out under atmospheric or reduced pressure. In an example, 25 parts of anhydrous sodium sulphate were added at about 80 DEG C. to 100 parts of a sodium alkyl sulphate solution of about 17 per cent concentration, which had been prepared from a C8-C18 alkene fraction and contained, besides the ester salt, about 6 per cent of sodium sulphate. The solution thus obtained was dried on a roller heated to about 175 DEG C. A white scaly product which contained about 35 per cent of ester salt, was obtained.
