Abstract

Aqueous solutions of anion-active detergents, e.g. higher alkyl sulphates and sulphonates, are thickened by incorporating therewith a methyl cellulose of a methoxyl content above 30 per cent and a viscosity above 750 c.p.s., as determined in 2 per cent aqueous solution at 20 DEG C. The concentration of methyl cellulose in the solutions may be 0.4-2 per cent. The viscosity of the solutions may be further increased by the addition of a salt, e.g. sodium, potassium or ammonium chloride or sulphate, but the concentration of salt in the solutions should not exceed 5 per cent, and account should be taken of any salt, e.g. sodium sulphate, present in the detergent. The thickened solutions may be made by adding the methyl cellulose to the detergent solution, heating the mixture to 80-90 DEG C. and then cooling it while stirring, the process being repeated if necessary. Alternatively, an aqueous solution of the methyl cellulose may be added to the detergent solution. Examples are given of the preparation of thickened solutions of the detergent sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Teepol."
