Abstract

Suponaceous detergents are obtained by adding an alkali metal silicate solution to a soap solution, and gradually adding an acid or acid salt solution--other than a fatty or sulphurated fatty acid or salt thereof--to precipitate silica in gelatinous form. Other ingredients, e.g. mineral powders, gum mucilage, rubber latex, colours, and perfumes may be added to the soap, the silicate or the product. Preferably potassium silicate is used with potash soaps, sodium silicate with soda soap; some of the silicate may remain as such. Precipitants specified are sulphuric acid, aluminium sulphate, potash or ammonia alum, and boric acid mixed or not, with cresylic acid. In an example, 8 vol. of freshly boiled soda soap containing 63 per cent of fatty acid is run into the crutching pan, and thinned with 2 vol. of water, 1 vol. of sodium silicate of 45 DEG Tw. and at 150 DEG F. is mixed in, and finally 2 vol. of 5 per cent. boric acid solution at 150 DEG F. Gum tragacanth mucilage to the extent of 5.6 per cent. of the soap product, and 1 per cent. of rubber latex may have been added to the silicate. Specification 402,091 is referred to.
