Abstract

In the manufacture of detergent products by treating an alkylaryl compound with an excess of a sulphonating agent and neutralizing the mixture, an addition of methyl alcohol is made to the mixture before it is neutralized, whereby a salt of methyl sulphate is formed in the mixture on neutralization. The tendency of the dried products to cake is thus reduced. Specification 738,879 is referred to.ALSO:Finely-divided detergent compositions containing an alkylaryl sulphonate are made less liable to cake by incorporating a minor proportion, e.g. 2-6 per cent, of a water-soluble salt of methyl sulphate. The components may be mixed and the mixture then finely subdivided, e.g. by spray-drying, or a preformed mixture may be obtained by sulphonating an alkylaryl compound with an excess of sulphuric acid, adding methyl alcohol to form methyl sulphate and neutralizing the mixture, which may then be spray dried. The compositions may also include other detergents, e.g. a higher alkyl sulphate, or additives such as sodium tripolyphosphate or other alkali-metal phosphate, an alkali-metal silicate or carbonate, carboxymethyl cellulose or a higher fatty alcohol. Comparative experimental results are given of the caking of compositions containing sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, with and without sodium methyl sulphate. The use of potassium and magnesium methyl sulphates is also mentioned. Specification 738,879, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.
