[Class 91] Non-soapy washing agents comprise a mixture of non-soapy detergents of the class in which sodium chloride or sulphate is produced during their manufacture, the chloride or sulphate being removed therefrom, together with an alkali metal carbonate, silicate, or orthophosphate or a mixture of such salts, the ingredients being present in the proportion of 1 part by weight of the de-salted detergent to “-4 parts by weight of the carbonate &c. The class of non-soapy detergent concerned comprises the sodium salts of a sulphonated or sulphated fatty alcohol, or of a condensation compound of isethionic acid. taurine, sarcosine or metaniline with a primary or secondary alkyl or allyl radical or a fatty acid acyl radical. In practice the sodium chloride or sulphate content may only be reduced, such as by alcohol extraction, to below 10 per cent. and preferably below 5 per cent. The preferred mixtures contain for one part by weight of the de-salted detergent from one to two parts by weight of the specified alkaline salts, calculated as anhydrous salts. The alkalinity of the resultant washing agent is adjusted so that a 0.1 per cent. by weight aqueous solution will have a pH of 8.5 to 11.5. In examples, the de-salted non-soapy detergents comprise the material known under the Registered Trade Mark "Gardinol" R, i.e., mainly the sodium salts of C 12 to C 14 fatty alcohol sulphates, sodium lauryl sulphate, and the sodium salt of the condensation product of palm kernel oil fatty acids with methyl taurine. The Provisional Specification also specifies that the carbonate may be a bicarbonate or sesquicarbonate, the silicate may be ortho- or meta-; and the alkali metal salts may include ammonium salts.
