Abstract

A detergent composition in bar form comprises a mixture of preformed soluble soap and at least one preformed alkaline earth metal, magnesium, zinc or aluminium salt of a C10-18 primary or secondary alkyl sulphate. The mixing of the salt and soap is carried out under conditions such that exchange of cations does not take place, i.e. with insufficient water to make the mixture fluid, or if more water than this is present the mixing is achieved quickly and the product dried immediately. The soap may be a conventional alkali metal soap, e.g. one derived from a mixture of tallow with coconut or palm kernel oil, while suitable salts are Al and Zn lauryl sulphates, Ca "coco" sulphate, and Al, Mg, Zn, or Ca C12-15 secondary alkyl sulphates. A small proportion of free saturated C10-18 fatty acid (e.g. lauric acid, or hydrogenated fatty acids comprising 50% coconut and 50% tallow) may be present, as also may be perfume, colour, opacifiers, superfatting agents and germicides.
