Abstract

A soap bar or tablet or a composition adapted to be produced in such form comprises by weight of the total composition, (a) 7-65% of a mixture containing (1) a water soluble salt of an N-fatty acyl taurine, and/or of an N-fatty acyl-N-methyl taurine, the total amount of taurines being 40-80% by weight of the mixture, and (2) a water soluble fatty acyl isethionate, and/or a water soluble alkyl sulphate, the weight of isethionate and/or alkyl sulphate being 60-20% by weight of the mixture, and all the fatty acyl or alkyl groups having 10-20 carbon atoms; (b) 0-25% of fatty acids of 12-20 carbon atoms and having an iodine value not above 10, fatty acids from hardened tallow being especially suitable; (c) 2-15%, preferably less than 12%, moisture; (d) up to 30% of the total detergent (a) of inorganic salt, generally sulphates and chlorides of sodium and potassium; and (e) at least 25% of alkali metal soaps, or a mixture of alkali metal, calcium, magnesium or zinc soaps derived from fatty acids of 9-25 carbon atoms at least 50% of which are acids of 12-18 carbon atoms, the weight ratio of calcium, magnesium or zinc soap not exceeding unity. In all cases, the detergents (a) are preferably the sodium or potassium salts, although the salts of other metals, ammonium, or substituted ammonium may also be used, and the fatty acyl groups are derived from the naturally occurring fatty acid mixtures of animal or vegetable oils; these acyl groups and the alkyl group of the alkyl sulphate are all preferably derived from coconut oil. Palm kernel monoethanolamide as a lather stabilizer, perfume, colour, preservative, opacifier and deodorant may also be incorporated. The composition may be prepared either directly by mixing or by spray-drying a slurry, after which the product is milled, plodded, cut into bars, and stamped.
