Abstract

Milled toilet detergent bars comprise (1) from 50 to 80% by weight of soaps having from 8 to 14 carbon atoms, the cations of said soaps being sodium or a mixture of sodium and potassium such that not more than 25% by weight of the soap is potassium soap; (2) from 0.5 to 30% by weight of one or more compounds of the general formula <FORM:0999895/C4-C5/1> where R is a C6 to C20 alkyl group and X and M, which may be the same or different are alkali metal, ammonium, mono-ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, magnesium or hydrogen, (3) not more than 15% by weight of water and (4) from 2 to 12% by weight of one or more alkali metal inorganic salts. Preferably, 25% by weight of the soap containing 8 to 14 carbon atoms in the molecule has 12 carbon atoms, e.g. soaps derived from coconut oil and tallow. The composition may also contain from 0.05 to 0.85 parts per part by weight of ingredient (1) of compatible synthetic detergent surfactant and/or 0.005 to 0.3 parts per part by weight of ingredient (1) but not more than 15% by weight of the total composition of a fatty acid having 8 to 20 carbon atoms. Synthetic detergent surfactants specified are alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates; alkyl sulphates; alkyl monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates; alkyl polyethenoxy ether sulphates; acyl sarcosinates; acyl esters of isothionates; acyl N-methyl taurides; alkyl benzene sulphonates; and alkyl phenol polyethenoxy sulphonates, wherein the alkyl and acyl groups contain from 10 to 20 carbon atoms. In addition, dialkyl esters of sulphosuccinic acid, sulphated and neutralized reaction products of a fatty amine and hydroxyacetic acid; salts of higher fatty alcohol esters of sulphocarboxylic acids and salts of esters of a straight chain primary alcohol and an alpha sulphonated fatty acid, e.g. the sodium salt of the methyl ester of alphas sulphonated tallow fatty acids; sodium lauryl sulphates, potassium N-methyl lauroyl tauride; triethanolamine dodecyl benzene sulphonate and sodium coconut alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate. The compounds of (2) above may be derived from tallow fatty acids. The alkali metal inorganic salts are sodium or potassium sulphates and chlorides. Other additives include insoluble soap, starch, finely divided clays, colouring matter, perfume, and antimicrobial agents. The bars are prepared by forming a homogeneous mixture of the soap, alpha sulphonated fatty acid compound inorganic salts and other additives if desired, drying to 10% moisture content, and then blending with free fatty acid content and water prior to milling and plodding. A specified example contains 19% sodium salt of coconut glycerol ether sulphonate, 31% sodium coconut soap, 23% sodium tallow soap, 10% 1 : 1 mixture of coconut and tallow fatty acid; 2.5% disodium salt of alpha sulphonated tallow fatty acids, 8% alkali metal inorganic salts, 4% water and 2.5% miscellaneous.
