574,504. Cleansing compositions; soaps. LEVER BROS. & UNILEVER, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1944. No. 2094. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1943. [Class 91] Higher fatty detergents such as alkali metal, ammonium, alkyl amine or alkylolamine soaps or sulphonates, sulphates or taurides derived from higher fatty materials are stabilised against rancidity by incorporating up to 5 per cent. by weight of a compound containing at least one trivalent nitrogen atom in the molecule and at least two carboxyl groups connected to at least one of the nitrogens through a short aliphatic chain, or a salt, ester or anhydride of such a compound. Suitable salts are the alkali metal, ammonium and amine salts, for instance the alkali metal salts of nitrilotriacetic acid, alkylene-diamino-tetracetic acid, C-alkyl nitrilotriacetic acid, C-dialkyl-nitrilotriacetic acid, C- phenyl-nitrilotriacetic acid, C-phenylalkyl-nitrilotriacetic acid or C- cyclohexenylnitrilotriacetic acid, while suitable esters are the methyl or ethyl esters. In examples, nitrilotriacetic acid or ethylene-diamino-tetracetic acid are added to a soap obtained by the saponification of a mixture of tallow and.coconut oil with caustic soda, the addition being made during either the crutching or the milling process.
