Abstract

A detergent composition in bar form comprises a mixture of preformed soluble soap and at least one preformed alkaline earth metal, magnesium, zinc or aluminium salt of an ether linked sulphonic acid derivative of the general formula RO.(CH2)n.SO3H, in which R is a C10-18 alkyl group, n is 1-3, and the group (CH2)n may carry not more than one unetherified hydroxyl group. The mixing of the soap and the salt is carried out under conditions such that exchange of cations does not take place, i.e. with insufficient water to make the mixture fluid, as if more water than this is present the mixing is achieved quickly and the product dried immediately. The soap may be a conventional alkali metal soap, e.g. one derived from a mixture of tallow with coconut or palm kernel oil, which suitable salts are calcium and zinc alkyl (from coconut) glyceryl ether sulphonates. A small proportion of free saturated C10-18 fatty acid (e.g. lauric acid) may be present, as also may be perfume, colour, opacifiers, superfatting agents, and germicides.
