Abstract

A milled and plodded detergent bar comprises, by weight (a) 8-20%, preferably 10-17%, of an alkali metal salt of a C10- 18-saturated fatty ether or ester of a glyceryl mono-sulphuric or sulphonic acid; (b) 3-10%, preferably 4-8%, of an alkali metal salt of a C10-18-acylamino-C2-4-alkane sulphonic acid; (c) 45-65% preferably 50-60%, soluble alkali metal soap, of which a major proportion consists of sodium soap, more than 65% of the fatty acids present are saturated, and over 75% of the fatty acids have 12-18 carbon atoms, and of which fatty acids having 12-18 carbon atoms, 25-60% have 12-14, and 75-40% have 16-18 carbon atoms; (d) either 3-10% alkali metal alkylaryl sulphonate in which the alkyl group contains 10-18 carbon atoms and is suitably derived either from kerosene or from a propylene polymer and the aryl group is benzene or a lower alkylbenzene such as toluene or xylene, or 2-10%, preferably 3-7% of an alkali-stable starch or modified starch i.e. starch ethers or esters; (e) moisture in an amount of 6-16% when starch is present, but up to a limit of 14% and alkylaryl sulphonate is included; and (f) less than 7%, preferably less than 5%, (total) of alkali metal sulphate and chloride. It is preferred that (a) be sodium hydrogenated coconut fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate; (b) be sodium N-C16-18-fatty acyl -N-methyl-tauride; (c) be a soap in which more than 70% of the acids are saturated, over 85% have 12-18 carbon atoms, of which 85% 30-50% have 12-14 and 70-50% have 16-18 carbon atoms, and is suitably a soap obtained from a mixture of tallow and coconut oil acids, and that the starch or modified starch (d) have an alkali number less than 10. (The term starch includes starch fractions such as amylopectin.) When starch is used, the composition preferably also includes 0.05-0.5% of a bisulphite, especially sodium metabisulphite although the potassium and magnesium salts may also be used. Suitable additives include perfumes, such as amyl salicylate, lavendin, or bois de rose, pigments, such as titanium dioxide, dyes, brighteners, bactericides such as 3 : 5-dichlorsalicyl-31 : 41-dichloranilide, sequestrants, antioxidants, e.g. cresol derivatives, and emollients. The bars are made in the conventional way, and small amounts of an alcohol, e.g. ethanol or isopropanol, may be added to prevent the starch from prematurely gelling.
