Abstract
Alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates may be prepared by reacting fatty alcohols with epichlorohydrin in the presence of stannous chloride as catalyst and then reacting the washed chloroglyceryl ether formed with either sodium or potassium sulphite. The product, which has detergent properties, may be made to contain a proportion of the alkyl diglyceryl ether sulphonate by employing an excess of epichlorhydrin. The "alkyl" group referred to is either dodecyl or a mixture containing at least 50 per cent of dodecyl, the balance being other C10-C16 alkyl radicals. Salts other than the sodium or potassium salts, for example the ammonium or substituted ammonium salts, may be obtained by subjecting the alkali metal salts to suitable ion exchange. Specifications 421,527, 488,196, 689,569, [all in Group III], and U.S.A. Specification 2,356,903 are referred to.ALSO:A detergent bar comprises (a) one or more sodium or potassium salts of a non-hydrolysing anionic organic sulphuric detergent product, at least 25 per cent and preferably at least 50 per cent, by weight consisting of an alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate with 10-16 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, or at least 50 per cent being dodecyl; (b) a soluble soap of a fatty acid with 10-18 carbon atoms, preferably a soap derived from coconut oil; and (c) a binder-filler. The relative proportions by weight are (a) 15-55 per cent, (b) 5-50 per cent, and (c) 20-70 per cent, the total of (a), (b) and (c) being 100 per cent and also constituting at least 75 per cent of the total weight of the bar. Desirably 10-30 per cent of the alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate is derived from an alkyl diglyceryl ether, and the ammonium or substituted ammonium salts of the alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate may be used in minor proportions. Preferred additional anionic detergents which may be present are either an alkyl sulphate, especially when at least 50 per cent of the alkyl groups are dodecyl, or an alkylbenzene sulphonate with 9-15 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, or both. Other anionic detergent types that may be used are the fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates, fatty acid glycol sulphates, isethionates, taurines, sulpho-acetates and sulphated hydroxyacetamides. The binder-filler may be a freshly precipitated calcium or magnesium soap, a superglycerinated lard fat, or oxidized starch. Fatty acid ethanolamides and miscellaneous salts such as sodium chloride and sulphate impurities may be included in the compositions. Specifications 421,527, 488,196 and 689,569 and U.S.A. Specification 2,356,903 are referred to.
