Abstract

An aqueous detergent composition comprises (a) an alkylphenol-ethylene oxide condensate, preferably a condensate of octylphenol with 5-20 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide, to which may be added a fatty acid alkanolamide in such amount that the alkanolamide is present in a minor proportion of the total, and (b) a dissolved whitening agent, preferably in an amount by weight of at least 0.1% of the composition, which is substantially more soluble in (a) than in water and which is substantive to a textile fibre. An anionic surface-active agent, for example the sodium, potassium, ammonium, magnesium, ethanolamine or triethanolamine salt of a primary alkyl sulphate containing 12-14 carbon atoms, generally in an amount up to that of (a), may also be present. Suitable whitening agents are the ditriazine derivative of sodium diaminostilbene disulphonate, alkylaminocoumarin (calcofluor SD), sodium 4:41-bis - [(4:6 - methoxyphenylamino) - 6 - (p - hydroxyethylmethylamino) - 1:3:5 - triazinyl-(2) - amino] - stilbene - 2:21 - disulphonate, bis-p-anisoyl derivative of 3:7-diaminodibenzothiophene sulphone-2:8-disodium sulphonate, and the compounds known under the Registered Trade Marks "Photine C and D" and "Tinopal RBS."
