Abstract

Hydraulic cement clinker is ground with the addition of 0.005 to 0.045 per cent of a compound of the general formula HO-R-(OR1)n-H, where R is an alkylene group which may have at least one hydrogen atom substituted by a group with or without replaceable hydrogen, R1 is an alkylene group which may have one or more hydrogen atoms substituted by a " solubilizing " group, i.e. an amino, aldehyde, or sulphonic acid group, or a group without replaceable hydrogen such as a sulphate or sulphonate group, and n is 1 to 6. The addition is normally made to facilitate grinding and improve concrete &c. made with the cement; alternatively, the additions may be made to cement after grinding. The alkylene groups may contain one to six carbon atoms and may be straight or branched chain. Compounds mentioned include monoethyl-, 2-nitropropyl-, and 2-aminopropyl-, ethers of ethylene glycol, and the monoethyl- and monobutyl-, ethers of p diethylene glycol. Cement - dispersing substances, e.g. waste sulphite liquor residue, or naphthalene sulphonic acids; wetting agents, e.g. lauryl sodium sulphate; accelerators, e.g. calcium chloride; puzzuolanic materials, &c., may also be incorporated in the mix.ALSO:Hydraulic cement clinker is ground with the addition of 0.005 to 0.045 per cent of a compound of the general formula HO-R-(OR1)n-H, where R is an alkylene group which may have at least one hydrogen atom substituted by a group with or without replaceable hydrogen, R1 is an alkylene group which may have one or more hydrogen atoms substituted by a "solubilizing" group, i.e. an amino, aldehyde, or sulphonic acid group, or a group without replaceable hydrogen such as a sulphate or sulphonate group, and n is 1 to 6.
