Abstract
A textile treating composition comprises (a) the reaction product of diethanolamine and a mixture of fatty acids in which 60-90% are C16-C18 acids and the remainder are C10-C14 acids, the molar ratio diethanolamine to fatty acid being at least 1:1, preferably 2:1, said product having an acid value up to 30 (as defined) and (b) a water-soluble C10-C16 alkyl sulphate detergent, (a) and (b) being in a ratio 1:1 to 4:1 by weight. For use as a liquid the composition contains (c) a solvent, particularly water, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, a mixture thereof, or butyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) in an amount 20-80% by weight of (a) + (b). Product (a) is constituted by fatty acid diethanolamides, diethanolamine soaps, fatty acid esters of fatty acid diethanolamides and free diethanolamine; in the liquid form (a) constitutes 15-65% by weight of the composition. The cation of (b) may be sodium (preferred) potassium, ammonium or substituted ammonium, examples of (b) being sodium lauryl and myristyl sulphates, potassium cetyl sulphate and sodium (coconut fatty alcohol) sulphate. The composition in a 3/4 -3% concentration in water is used at 100-105 DEG F. to "full" worsted at pH 2-5 or pH 11, and may then be used in an alkaline scouring bath together with soda ash, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and salts of E.D.T.A., N-hydroxy E.D.T.A., nitrilotriacetic acid or diethylenetriamineopentaacetic acid. Sodium sulphate is also present in the examples.ALSO:An acid or alkaline fulling composition for worsted comprises (a) the reaction product of diethanolamine and a mixture of fatty acids in which 60-90% are C16-C18 acids and the remainder are C10-C14 acids, the molar ratio diethanolamine to fatty acid being at least 1 : 1, said product having an acid value (as defined) up to 30, and (b) a water-soluble C10-C16 alkyl sulphate detergent, (a) and (b) being in a weight ratio 1 : 1 to 4 : 1. For use as a liquid the composition contains (c) a solvent, particularly water, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, a mixture thereof or butyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) in an amount 20-80% by weight of (a) + (b). The composition in a 3/4 -3% concentration in water is used at 100-105 DEG F to full worsted under acid conditions e.g. pH 2-5, or alkaline conditions e.g. up to pH 11, and may then be passed into a scouring bath and used in combination with soda ash, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose and salts of E.D.T.A, N-hydroxy E.D.T.A, nitrilotriacetic acid or diethylenetriamino-pentaacetic acid.
