Abstract

Textile material composed of acetone-soluble cellulose acetate is treated with a hot aqueous solution containing at least 0.75 c.c. per litre of hydrogen peroxide of 130 volume strength and an anionic surface-active detergent or an alkalimetal soap. The solution may be at 97 DEG to 100 DEG C. and have a pH of 7 to 9.5. The surface-active compound may be a water-soluble salt of an acid sulphate or acid phosphate of a monohydroxy aliphatic hydrocarbon containing at least ten successive carbon atoms, for example, lauryl sulphate, palmityl sulphate, stearyl sulphate, oleyl sulphate or the sulphate of an alcohol mixture obtained by reduction of coconut oil fatty acids. When the solution contains an alkali metal soap, the treatment may be followed by treatment with an alkali metal salt of a long chain alkyl sulphate. In the example, a cellulose acetate fabric is treated with a soap solution at 85 DEG C. and then with a solution containing soap and hydrogen peroxide at 99 DEG C., followed by scouring at 65 DEG C. in a solution containing ammonia and a fatty alcohol sulphate.
