Abstract

Cellulosic fibres are treated with from 60 to 125 per cent of the weight of the fibres of an alkaline solution containing hydrogen peroxide, a tripolyphosphate and an alkali metal salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid but no silicate, and are then steamed in an enclosed space. The alkalinity may be obtained with sodium hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate. The hydrogen peroxide may be liberated from an alkali metal peroxide in the aqueous solution. The bleaching of cotton fabrics is described. The liquid may be applied by padding rolls or by immersing the fibres and removing excess, and the steaming may be effected in a Jay box.
