Abstract

The contamination of natural and synthetic fibres e.g., cotton textile materials and cellulosic fibres intended for use in the production of surgical dressings and in paper-making, by metals, e.g., copper, iron and manganese, is controlled by subjecting the fibres to a kier boil stage with an aqueous alkaline liquid containing an organic sequestering or chelating agent having the formula CH2 OH (CH OH)a COOH in which a = 5 or 6, or an alkali metal salt thereof, e.g. sodium heptonate, the kier boil stage preceding or accompanying a bleaching stage for the fibres. 0.1% by weight of sequestering agent based on the weight of the processing liquor may be used. The bleaching agent may be hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate and the solution may also contain sodium carbonate and an alkali metal silicate.
