Abstract
In a process for removing size from sized textile fabrics, a bath is used containing a small amount of persulphate, e.g. 0,2--2 grams/litre. In addition to the persulphate, percarbonates, perphosphates, perborates, or peroxides may be added to the bath. The process may be used for fabrics of vegetable, animal or artificial materials, and the bath may be acid, alkaline or neutral. Baths containing persulphate and 2--10 grams/litre caustic alkali are particularly useful for cotton fabric, at temperatures up to boiling point if desired. At temperatures above 80 DEG C. lower concentration of alkali, e.g. 1 gram NaOH or 2,3 grams of soda/litre may be used. For coloured, striped or bordered materials, small quantities of hydrogen peroxide should be added to the bath. Used boiling or bleaching baths may be employed for the treatment, persulphate and alkali if necessary being added in the required amount. The baths used for desizing may also in some cases be used immediately after for the boiling or scalding treatment. The persulphate containing bath may also act simultaneously as a bucking, bleaching or other bath. Weakly alkaline, neutral or acid baths are particularly suitable for fabrics containing animal fibres or for coloured, striped or bordered materials, or for nappy materials, e.g. velvet or flannel. Weakly alkaline persulphate baths may contain NaOH in small quantities and/or carbonates, tertiary phosphates, pyrophosphates, metaphosphates or borates having weakly alkaline reaction. Such baths and baths containing only persulphate initially may become neutral or acid during treatment. The treatment may be carried out by steeping the goods in vats or circulation apparatus, kettles, jigs, or on the reel or clapot. The goods, especially singed or closely woven goods should be wetted before desizing with hot water, or hot baths containing wetting agents. Or wetting agents may be added to the desizing bath. In an example, cotton piece goods are treated in an impregnating machine with a bath containing per 1000 litres of bath, 10 litres of NaOH (40 DEG B<\>ae.) and 2 kgs. sodium persulphate at 80--90 DEG C. The goods pass through the bath at about 100 metres/minute. After resting some hours, they pass through a washer into a kettle. Subsequent bucking yields a product free from stains. In a second example, coloured, striped or bordered materials of American cotton are treated with a bath containing caustic soda, potassium persulphate and hydrogen peroxide, and are subsequently bleached with an oxygen bath. Other examples are given in the Specification.
