Abstract

Aqueous solutions of monoperacetic acid suitable for use in the bleaching of fibrous materials are prepared by reacting hydrogen peroxide with acetic acid in the presence of ammonia or a primary, secondary or tertiary organic nitrogenous base, e.g. monoethanolamine, triethanolamine or pyridine, at a pH value of less than 6. At least 65% of the hydrogen peroxide used may be reacted to form peracetic acid. Phosphates, e.g. sodium pyrophosphate, may be added to adjust or buffer the optimum pH value in the solution. Specification 561,180 is referred to.ALSO:Fibrous materials, e.g. cotton, linen, acetate rayon, regenerated cellulose, cellulose pulp and polyamide, polyester and polyacrylonitrile fibres, are bleached by treating them with an aqueous solution of monoperacetic acid prepared by reacting hydrogen peroxide with acetic anhydride in the presence of ammonia or a primary, secondary or tertiary organic nitrogenous base, e.g. monoethanolamine, triethanolamine and pyridine, at a pH value of less than 6. Solutions in which at least 65% of the hydrogen peroxide used is reacted to form peracetic acid are preferably used. Phosphates, e.g. sodium pyrophosphate, may be added to the solutions to avoid undesirable catalytic effects and contamination of the material to be bleached or of the process water with iron, manganese and copper and to adjust or buffer the optimum pH value in the solution. Bleaching is preferably effected at 60 DEG -90 DEG C. in closed vessels. The material to be bleached may be precleaned or desized prior to bleaching and may be subjected to a pretreatment with strong caustic alkali. Before or after bleaching with the monoperacetic acid solution the fibrous materials may be given a weak treatment with other bleaching agents, e.g. sodium hypochlorite. Materials which have been dyed with vat or naphthol dyestuffs may be bleached without causing changes in the hue or fastness of the dyestuffs. Specification 561,180 is referred to.
