Abstract
The tendency to felt of materials consisting wholly or partly of wool or like animal fibres, e.g. yarn, fabrics or garments, is reduced by immersing them for a few minutes in a bath containing an aqueous solution of potassium or sodium permanganate and acid, the pH value of which is not more than 2.0. The treatment may be effected at room temperature or higher temperatures. Discolouration of the materials may be subsequently removed by treatment in an acidified solution of a reducing agent such as sodium sulphite or sodium bisulphite or by hydrogen peroxide, or by strong acid, and the materials may be treated with acid prior to treatment with the reducing agent. In an example, wool socks are scoured with soap, rinsed, and immersed for 1 to 2 minutes in an aqueous solution of potassium permanganate containing sulphuric acid at 20 DEG C. and at a pH of 1.5 to 1.7. The socks are then rinsed, bleached in an aqueous solution of sodium bisulphite, and, if desired, rinsed in a solution of soap and ammonia. Specification 5612/07, [Class 15], is referred to.
