Abstract
Wool is rendered unshrinkable by treatment in an aqueous liquor containing a water-soluble bromate and hydrochloric acid, the concentration of the bromate being not smaller than the equivalent of 0.7 gm. of bromine per litre and the minimum concentration of the hydrochloric acid being governed by a formula which is itself dependent upon the bromate concentration and the temperature of the liquor, which temperature should not exceed 35 DEG C. Hydrochloric acid may be used as such or generated in situ from a chloride and another acid or acid salt, e.g. sulphuric acid or a bisulphate. Wetting agents, e.g. alkali lauryl sulphate or oleyl sulphate and protective colloids, e.g. glue or gum, may be added to the liquor. Woollen cloth may be milled during the treatment, in which case the acid and/or bromate may be present initially in reduced amount, the balance being added when the milling operation is interrupted. The wool may be after-treated by, for example, rinsing, soaking in alkali bisulphite solution, washing with ammonia and again rinsing. In examples, the bromate employed is potassium bromate and the temperature employed is 12 DEG , 25 DEG and 35 DEG C.
