Abstract

Wool, or material containing wool, is treated with a solution containing an organic per-acid of the general formula R.CO.O.OH (where R is hydrogen or an alkyl group) or per-monosulphuric acid or per-disulphuric acid or with an alkali metal salt of the persulphuric acid in an acid solution, either of which solutions may contain an anionic wetting agent, followed by treatment with an aqueous solution of a halogen or an acidified solution of a hypohalite of an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal. The excess halogen may be removed by treatment with sodium bisulphite. In a modification, the material may be treated in one solution containing the per-acid or (acidified) per-salt and the halogen or hypohalite, with or without an anionic wetting agent, and subsequently with sodium bisulphite. The organic per-acid may be performic acid or per-acetic acid, the halogen may be chlorine or bromine and the hypohalite may be sodium hypochlorite or hypobromite, the solution of which may be acidified with hydrochloric acid. In the examples the treating solutions are all at 15 DEG C.
