Abstract

Textile material consisting wholly or partly of wool is treated in an aqueous solution at a pH between 1 and 2 to which a chlorinating or brominating agent is added as a drip feed, that is, each addition of 1 per cent of chlorine or bromine (calculated on the weight of the material) is made in at least 5 minutes and preferably in 10 minutes. The chlorinating or brominating agent may be sodium hypochlorite, bromine or sodium hypobromite. The material may be aftertreated with sodium carbonate and rinsed. The pH of the aqueous liquid is obtained with sulphuric acid. The agent may be added as a liquid, e.g. in aqueous solution, near the bottom of the treatment bath.
