Abstract

Wool is rendered non-felting by treating it with an aqueous hypochlorite solution having an available chlorine content of 0.035 per cent to 0.09 per cent by weight, a pH, by the addition of an acidic material, e.g., hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, of 2.2-3.5, and a temperature of 4 DEG -24 DEG C., maintaining the solution within the specified limits of concentration by the continuous addition of aqueous hypochlorite solution and acid during the treatment and removing the wool after 30-70 seconds. Alternatively, the wool may be subjected to a plurality of treatments with the solution, in successive baths, the concentration of which is maintained constant and in which the total time of treatment does not exceed 70 seconds. Specified hypochlorites are those of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals, e.g., sodium, potassium and calcium hypochlorites, and hypochlorous acid. The wool may be initially wetted out with a wetting agent, or with the successive bath technique a wetting agent may be added to the first bath.
