Abstract

A mixture of hydroxides of nickel and cobalt at least a portion of which are divalent are oxidized in aqueous medium to the trivalent state and nickel extracted with an aqueous liquor containing chlorine. To avoid loss, the oxidation is preferably carried out with only sufficient medium to produce a slurry, paste or foam. Suitable oxidizing agents are aqueous solutions of chlorates and hypochlorites, and the reaction is preferably carried out at room temperature although higher temperatures, e.g. 40 DEG to 50 DEG C., may be employed: the preferred oxidizing agent is aqueous chlorine with which the temperature used should not exceed 100 DEG C. After oxidation the hydroxides are filtered or centrifuged and treated with the liquor, preferably saturated with chlorine, and desirably containing a salt which permits the solution to hold more chlorine such as the chloride of a metal, e.g. sodium or calcium, of which the hydroxide is soluble. Temperature of 50 DEG to 100 DEG C., preferably 90 DEG to 95 DEG C., are preferred. Examples are given.
