Abstract

Octachlorodihydroxydiphenyl is made by hydrolysing powdered decachlorodiphenyl with an aqueous solution of alkaline hydroxide or alkaline earth hydroxides in the absence of organic solvents at a temperature in excess of 200 DEG C., and precipitating the octachlorodihydroxydiphenyl thus formed by acidification of the reactants. The hydrolysis is preferably carried out between 240 DEG and 250 DEG C. Powdered decachlorodiphenyl of 20 to 40 microns as described in Specification 897,149 may be used. If still finer powder is used, the addition of a wetting agent is advisable, e.g. sodium methyloleyltauride or monolaurate of polyethyleneglycol. The crude octachlorodihydroxydiphenyl may be purified by the alkaline aqueous solution of impure product with a salt of a heavy metal or alkaline earth metal, e.g. a salt of iron, copper, manganese, calcium, barium, strontium or magnesium, then separating the metal hydroxide formed and precipitating by acidification, e.g. with a mineral acid, such as sulphuric or hydrochloric, and draining, washing and drying the purified octachlorodihydroxydiphenyl.
