Abstract

Metal soaps, defined as the water insoluble salts of organic acids having at least 6 C atoms and a metal other than an alkali metal, e.g. aluminium, the alkaline earth metals, lead, zinc, are prepared by forming an aqueous suspension of an oxide or hydroxide of a metal capable of forming a basic metal carbonate, reacting such suspension with carbon dioxide, while stirring to form a suspension of the basic carbonate, forming an aqueous emulsion of a molten or liquid fatty acid in the presence of ammonia and adding the emulsion to the suspension to form the metal soaps. The reaction with carbon dioxide may be effected by passing the gas through the suspension for 1 to 4 hours. The invention is particularly described with reference to the preparation of zinc stearate and lead stearate, which are recovered by filtration.
