Abstract
The stabilization of a -FeO(OH) against change of crystalline form is achieved by treating it with an aqueous solution of salts of aluminium (preferably at pH 8 to 11.4), titanium (preferably at pH 1.1 to 3.8) or zirconium (preferably at pH 1.1 to 3.5) or an alkali metal silicate (preferably sodium silicate at pH 8.5 to 11.2) or an alkaline earth metal silicate, at a pH within the region of incipient hydrolytic polymerization. Preferably, the salt concentration is 1 to 5% by weight. This stabilization enables the conversion of normal a -Fe2O3 to g -Fe2O3, which necessarily must be via a -FeO(OH) for the g -Fe2O3 to have the required electro-acoustical properties.
