Abstract
Terephthalic acid is purified by heating crude terephthalic acid, water and an amount of a water-soluble alkaline material not exceeding 0.61 equivalents for each equivalent of the terephthalic acid to form a solution, cooling the solution and separating the solid terephthalic acid which forms. Preferably the heating is carried out at a temperature of at least 200 DEG C. Preferred alkaline compounds are the hydroxides of the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and ammonia, and the ammonium, alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts of weak inorganic and organic acids. The alkaline compounds may be used alone or in combination. The terephthalic acid that is present as its salt with the alkaline compound in the filtrate remaining after separation of solid terephthalic acid may be recovered by acidifying and recycling to a further recrystallization. Detailed examples are given.
