Abstract
Terephthalic acid is purified by heating it under pressure with water containing an oxidizing agent having no oxidizing effect on the terephthalic acid itself, continuing the heating until solution occurs, preferably to above 200 DEG C., cooling the resultant solution and allowing terephthalic acid to crystallize out. Oxidizing agents specified are potassium or sodium permanganate, chromic acid or derivatives thereof such as potassium or sodium dichromate, chromium trioxide, manganese dioxide or mixtures thereof. The treatment may be preceded by a simple recrystallization of the terephthalic acid from water under pressure, or by treating it in aqueous solution under pressure with a reducing agent which does not reduce the terephthalic acid itself. Reducing agents mentioned are sodium hyposulphite, titanous sulphate, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, nascent hydrogen, phosphorous acid and stannous chloride. Examples are given.
