Abstract
Ferrous sulphate in aqueous solution is treated with calcium chloride to form calcium sulphate and ferrous chloride, the resultant ferrous chloride is hydrolysed to iron oxide and the hydrogen chloride produced during the hydrolysis is caused to react with limestone or chalk to yield calcium chloride, and this chloride is used to treat further ferrous sulphate. The calcium sulphite is separated from the ferrous chloride solution by filtration and the ferrous chloride is converted to solid form and hydrolysed by a mixture of steam and oxygen at a temperature of from 300-350 DEG C. The ferrous chloride may, however, be dried and hydrolysed in a single step by being sprayed into gases containing steam and oxygen at 300-350 DEG C.
