Abstract

Hydrated silica having a surface area of 120-200 m.2/gm and containing 2-20% of lead, titanium, or zinc oxide is produced by precipitating silica at a pH of above 9 and a temperature of 40-80 DEG C., adding a solution of a lead, titanium, or zinc salt, and adjusting the pH to 7-9 by the addition of acid. In the example, hydrated silica is produced from aqueous sodium silicate and carbon dioxide, zinc sulphate is added to the resulting suspension, and the pH is adjusted with sulphuric acid.
