Abstract
1311698 Silica-coated chrome pigments IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Sept 1971 [15 Oct 1970] 49060/70 Heading C4A [Also in Division C1] Silica-coated chrome pigments are obtained by adding a suspension of the chrome pigment in an aqueous solution of a silicic acid salt to an aqueous medium at 60-100‹ C., while maintaining the pH of the aqueous medium at 2-9 throughout, and 2-7 until more than 70% of the pigment suspension has been added. Aqueous Na 2 SiO 3 is preferably used, in an amount 1-40% (as SiO 2 ) by wt. of the pigment weight. The aqueous medium may be water containing an acid, e.g. HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 or CH 3 COOH, or acid salt, e.g. the sulphate or chloride of Al or NH 4 , and having an initial pH of 3À0-5À5. Preferably 0À2-10% by wt. of a metal oxide or hydroxide is also deposited on the pigment; this may be Al 2 O 3 , either deposited with the SiO 2 when the aqueous medium contains an Al salt, or deposited on the SiO 2 - coated pigment by further treatment with an aqueous Al salt solution. Examples 1-4 relate to a molybdenum chrome and 5-6 to lead chromate.
