Abstract

The invention comprises a complex of iron with a carboxymethyl ether of inherently water-dispersible dextran containing, per anhydroglucose unit, an average of about 1,0 to 3,0 carboxymethyl groups. The complexes may contain ferrous or ferric iron. The novel complexes may be made by adding an aqueous solution of a water-soluble iron salt to an aqueous solution of a carboxymethyl ether of inherently water-dispersible dextran containing an average of 1,0 to 3,0 carboxymethyl groups per anhydroglucose unit, holding the mixture at acid pH until the complex is formed, adding aqueous alkali to the mixture to adjust the pH thereof to a value at which the complex formed is stable, and precipitating and separating the complex. The ferrous complex may be formed using ferrous ammonium sulphate or ferrous chloride and is precipitated by adjusting the pH to between 6,2 and 10,2 by adding aqueous alkali such as aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, and adding the water-miscible non-solvent, such as isopropanol. When ferric chloride is used to form the ferric complex, the addition of sodium hydroxide solution to raise the pH to 1,3-1,4 results in a heavy precipitate of the ferric complex.
