Abstract

Oxide surfaces chemically produced on aluminium or aluminium-base alloy articles in an alkaline solution, are rendered more adsorptive (especially as respects dyes) by immersion in an aqueous solution of at least one ammonium, aluminium or magnesium salt of a monovalent acid. The salts preferred are the chloride, nitrate, acetate, formate, sulphamate of ammonium; the chloride of aluminium; the chloride, acetate of magnesium: and are used in total amount of 0.5-10 per cent by weight. The solution is used preferably at a temperature above 170 DEG F, and should have a pH below 7.5 and preferably between 5 and 7. Specification 212,504, [Class 82(ii)], is referred to.
