Abstract
Cadmium selenide is prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of a cadmium salt with hydrogen selenide whilst maintaining a pH of 3-7, preferably 6. The cadmium selenide may be removed by decanting or otherwise. In the example, hydrogen selenide is prepared by dropping water onto aluminium selenide obtained by igniting aluminium powder and selenium, and passed into a solution of cadmium nitrate obtained by diluting a solution of cadmium in nitric acid, the concentrated solution having been previously heated until nitric acid was exhausted. The nitric acid liberated by the hydrogen selenide was neutralized by constantly adding sodium hydroxide solution to maintain the pH as near as possible to 6. Cadmium selenide was recovered by centrifuging, washing, drying and baking the precipitate under vacuum for an hour. Cadmium acetate, chlorate, chloride or sulphate may be used in place of the nitrate and sodium hydroxide may be replaced by other basic agents. If the pH exceeds 7, cadmium hydroxide is produced.
