Abstract

In a cyclic process for the production of sodium bicarbonate and ammonium sulphate from sodium sulphate reacting with ammonia, water and carbon dioxide, solid ammonium bicarbonate, carbonate or sesquicarbonate may be wholly or partially substituted, a starting solution (I), saturated with bicarbonate at the temperature of precipitation of this salt, is heated to remove the bicarbonate and then the solution is evaporated and cooled to a temperature exceeding 40 DEG C. to crystallize out ammonium sulphate and leave solution (II). On addition of sodium sulphate and "ammonium bicarbonate" sodium bicarbonate crystallizes out and the starting solution (I) containing sodium, ammonium, sulphate and bicarbonate ions is obtained to begin the cycle once more. The process is characterized in that if the temperature for precipitation of bicarbonate is 40 DEG C. and that of ammonium sulphate 55 DEG C. the condition must be satisfied that x-y/1-y > 0.72 and preferably 0.70 < x < 0.80 and 0.10 < y < 0.30 where <FORM:0767629/III/1> <FORM:0767629/III/2> The combination of temperatures may be altered and the limits prescribed above vary accordingly. Preferably the sodium bicarbonate is precipitated between 25 DEG and 45C DEG . and the ammonium sulphate between 50 DEG and 75C DEG . Preferably the composition of the solution from which sodium bicarbonate is precipitated is one which is saturated at the same time with sodium bicarbonate, sodium ammonium sulphate and ammonium bicarbonate. The yield in the process may be increased by adding readily soluble salts which contain one of the ions of the process, e.g. sodium or ammonium nitrate or rhodanide. A similar process for the production of ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate is referred to in Specification 606,456.
