Abstract

An alkali metal carbonate is made by (a) mixing for up to 5 minutes an alkali metal carbonate, an alkali metal bicarbonate and water, in a sequence providing for formation of a hydrated carbonate, contacting the bicarbonate therewith with consequent formation of a product containing solid alkali metal sesquicarbonate, the equivalent proportion of bicarbonate to carbonate being in the range 5 : 1 to 1 : 1; (b) the product is then heated to decompose and dehydrate the mixture, leaving alkali metal carbonate, which has larger particles than those formed from the calcination of an alkali metal bicarbonate alone, and has bulk density of 25-56 lb./cu. ft. The alkali metal may be Li, Na, K, Cs, or Rb, and the starting material may contain an ammonium salt of carbonic acid, or water; e.g. it may be "ammonia-soda crystals." Alkali metal sesquicarbonate is made by process (a) above, modified by use of a bicarbonate : carbonate equivalent proportion 1 : 1.6 to 1 : 2, followed by (c) ageing the product at 20-100 DEG C. without loss of H2O and CO2, and drying at a temperature below the sesquicarbonate decomposition temperature. If the bicarbonate : carbonate equivalent proportion is 1 : 2, substantially pure sesquicarbonate results. Specification 765,602 is referred to.
