Abstract

Dense sodium carbonate is prepared by reacting caustic soda solution with sufficient sodium bicarbonate, with or without CO2, in the presence of anhydrous Na2CO3 to fix all water as Na2CO3.H2O and calcining the monohydrate. Caustic soda solutions, containing more than 40% NaOH, may be those from the electrolysis of sodium chloride in mercury-cathode cells, at 70 DEG C. The crude product of the carbonation of ammoniacal brine in the ammonia-soda process may be the moist sodium bicarbonate, and the light Na2CO3 product of such process, at 180 DEG C. may also be the anhydrous Na2CO3. The reaction may be at 100 DEG C. in a stirred vessel, a paddle or screw mixer, or a rotating drum. The reactants may be added simultaneously or successively in any order, e.g. bicarbonate, carbonate, solution, or solution, bicarbonate, carbonate, or half carbonate, bicarbonate, half carbonate, solution. Alternatively, a saturated solution of Na2CO3 may be added to the three reactants, giving a more fluid magma, e.g. 200-400 g./1000 g. The saturated Na2CO3 solution after removal of the Na2CO3.H2O may be used again. Particle size distribution of the final product is tabulated.
